A few comments from me,
Taikomochi Arai, after I received the interview of
Japan Times' staff writer Mr. Uranaka on October
13, 2002 As
no other Taikomochi than me has posted his own
homepage on the Internet, I had been preparing
English and French versions of my Japanese homepage
in response to occasional inquiries by e-mail or
directly from overseas about Geisha and relevant
traditional Japanese entertainment culture in order
to provide as many foreign people as possible with
information about Taikomochi, Geisha's male
counterpart, when I received an e-mail from Mr.
Uranaka, Japan Times' staff writer, making a
request for an interview with me. In response to his strong request for direct
interview with me, I took advantage of my planned
visit to Kamakura, a historic city in the vicinity
of the Tokyo area, arranging for a traditional
Japanese room as a venue for the interview because
he wanted to have a picture of me in kimono taken
by Japan Times' staff cameraman Mr. Sawaguchi. Both,
young and handsome, who, although vaguely
acquainted with the existence of male Geisha called
Taikomochi, had had little or no information about
their role in traditional Geisha entertainment
banquets, put simple and frank questions to me
about the traditional male entertainer in such an
enjoyable and pleasant atmosphere that the
interview lasted for as long as four or five hours
before we knew it. I would like to take this opportunity to express
my appreciation to both of them again for having
carried such an informative account of Taikomochi
in the Japan Times, especially allowing me to
understand what portions of this tradition young
people are interested in. |
